On Saturday, Selma Blair revealed on Instagram that she is battling autoimmune disease Multiple Sclerosis. She revealed that she was diagnosed with the illness in August, and she was inspired to share her story by her costumer Allisa Swanson.
You can see the Instagram post below. What is Multiple Sclerosis? MS is a long-lasting disease that affects the spinal cord, brain, and eyes. It causes a lot of problems with ones muscle control, vision, balance and other bodily functions. Effects are different for those who have the disease, and symptoms can range from mild to severe. The disease is progressive, and nerves in ones body will deteriorate over time and may become permanently damaged. According to Blair's post, she is "in the thick of it," and she hopes her story will "give some hope to others." Additionally, she thanked friends Sarah Michelle Geller, Jaime King, and Freddie Prinze Jr. for support. The National Institute of Health reports that 400,000+ people in the US suffer from MS.
