Today is National Love Your Pet Day, and in honor of this momentous holiday, I want to talk a little bit about my special cat, Patches.
Patches is a 16-year-old cat that has been in our family since she was about 1 or 2. She is a rescue, saved first by my stepmother. Patches is special in the fact that she is incredibly sweet.
Most of her life, she had been surrounded by other cats and dogs. In the last 2 and a half years, I have taken on full-time care of Patches. She and I started hanging out a lot more after I moved home after a very tough breakup. Patches would curl up beside me and give me so much love.
Last year, I almost lost her. She developed a rare cancer in her hind leg, and I had to choose between chemo (which would put her in a lot of pain and there was no guarantee she would survive), and removing her hind leg. I said yes to removing her hind leg. It was a bit awkward at first, but she made a full recovery. She is 100% cancer-free. She still tumbles due to not having that 4th leg, but she gets back up and goes back to being her cute self.
Patches is sweet, protective, and full of personality. She was protective of me during my second spinal surgery recovery, and she is even more protective of me now that I'm pregnant.
I wake up everyday with her little face staring at me, and I continue to be grateful that Patches is still with me.
Even though today is National Love Your Pet Day, I celebrate my kitty everyday. She is my best friend.
