It's that time again, folks!
Many people look forward (no pun intended) to Daylight Savings Time, since it means that spring is right around the corner. Others curse it because it means we are robbed of an hour of sleep.
Regardless of where you stand, overnight tonight, we will be springing forward.
What is Daylight Savings Time?
Daylight Savings Time (DST) was invented by Benjamin Franklin in an attempt to utilize the daylight hours. DST has been used throughout North America and Europe since World War I.
In 1966, (then) President Lyndon Johnson signed into law that DST would begin on the last Sunday of April and end on the last Sunday in October. In 1986, the law was amended so that DST could begin on the FIRST Sunday in April. In 2005, (then) President George W. Bush signed an energy bill that extended DST by 4 weeks (DST would begin on the second Sunday of March). This law went into effect in 2007.
What may or may not surprise you is that DST can have an impact on our health. Health.com reports that there is an increase in heart attacks right after set out clocks ahead an hour. Some may experience exhaustion and fatigue (both of which may heavily impact your teenage son or daughter).
A few states have expressed interest in opting out of DST. Recently, Florida has expressed interest in making DST a yearlong event.
