Before I begin, I want to say that I have been wrestling with whether I should write something on this. As a mom (to be), I feel like I needed to say something about what is taking place in our schools.
Yesterday, one of the deadliest shootings in the modern era took place.
A 19-year-old former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida went into the school and opened fire, killing 17 and injuring many more. The shooter was taken into custody and has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.
The gunman, Nikolas Cruz, is said to be a disturbed individual. Former classmates report that Cruz used to talk about guns and killing animals all the time. Cruz is an orphan, his father died years ago, and his mother died late last year.
A white supremacy group revealed Thursday that Cruz was a part of the group.
Donald Trump has discussed the tragedy and ordered flags across the country at half-staff.
My Two Cents
Since news of the shooting came out, I have been terrified for children all over the country. I read that this is the 18th school shooting this year. It's February! What is going on in our schools? Schools are supposed to be a safe place for our children to learn and grow.
My son is due in May, and in 5 years, he will have to be enrolled in school. Will I have to worry about some madman/woman coming into the school and starting a massacre? It's horrifying to think about!
I don't feel comfortable sending my child to school when he comes of age. I'm starting to look into homeschooling options.
There are no words to express how broken my heart is for the victims and their families. Sending my thoughts, prayers, and love to everyone in Florida at this time. My gratitude goes out to the first responders and the heroes that saved children in the school. God bless you all.
18 school shootings since 2018 began. Something needs to be done to stop these tragedies. How many more innocent children and adults will have to die before action is taken? I know my readers are on both sides of the political fence, so I won't share what I think we should do. All I want is for the shootings to end. I want our children to be safe. What ever needs to be done to make that happen, I will stand behind that decision.
