Sad news out of Hollywood: Beloved actress Charlotte Rae has died. She was 92.
Last year, Rae revealed that she had been diagnosed with bone cancer. Seven years prior to being diagnosed with bone cancer, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (which she beat). Rae stated that with the bone cancer, she wasn't in any pain. Since she wasn't in pain, she decided to opt for life and not go through treatment.
"I love life. I’ve had a wonderful one already … I’ve had a great life, but I have so many wonderful things happening. I’d like to choose life. I’m grateful for the life I’ve already had."
Charlotte Rae was best known for playing the lovable Mrs Garrett on both Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life. Little known fact is that it was Rae who had the idea for Diff'rent Stroke's spinoff, The Facts of Life. Both shows became iconic with their messages. In 1986, Rae had to leave Facts of Life for health reasons. Cloris Leachman, who played Mrs. Garrett's sister, helmed the series until its cancellation in 1988.
Rae had numerous guest appearances in the years after 'Facts.' She guest starred on Pretty Little Liars, The King of Queens, and ER.
In her personal life, she maintained 44 years of sobriety and appreciated every moment of her life.
RIP Charlotte Rae. I grew up watching both Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life. You always made me smile, giggle, and you made my heart warm with your messages. You will be tremendously missed.
Below is a scene from The Facts of Life where Mrs Garrett comforted an unreasonable Tootie. Below that video is a scene from Diff'rent Strokes.
