Sara Ramirez, best known for their role as Dr. Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy, has come out as gender nonbinary.
They shared the news on Thursday, captioning the post: "In me is the capacity to be everything from a girlish boy to a boyish girl." Ramirez also shared their preferred pronouns as being "she/her" and "they/them." Their announcement was met with A TON of positive response. Many of their fans actually called them a "nonbinary queen." Ramirez played a bisexual character on Grey's Anatomy, and their character ended up paving the way for increased bisexual representation on TV and the big screen. In 2016, Ramirez came out as bisexual. Ramirez was inspired to come out in 2016, after the Pulse tragedy. The Pulse massacre was one of the deadliest attacks on LGBTQ+ people and Latinos in history (I went to school with one of the victims of the massacre. RIP Kim Morris! Your family at Post will always remember you). I have seen some of the negative responses to Ramirez sharing their truth with the world. Trolls have been mocking Ramirez and accusing them of having a mental illness. The only mental illness in this situation is from the trolls flaming Ramirez. Ignorance is deadly. We can only become enlightened when we open our minds and learn from one another. Sara Ramirez has done something pretty f*cking powerful. They shared their truth with the world, and shared what pronouns we should use. Sara, you are an incredibly courageous human. Thank you for sharing your truth, and I know you will inspire a lot of people to share their truths.
