Over the last week, social media has been flooded with selfies that are in black and white. Celebrities, such as: Maria Kanellis, Mackenzie Rosman, Mariah Carey, Candace Cameron Bure, Tamera Mowry, Chelsea Handler, Charlize Theron, Loretta Lynn, and Laura Prepon have challenged their friends and fans to join in on sharing their black and white selfies. Millions of people have shared their black and white selfies, showing their support for women empowering women.
While sharing the pics are great, I hope people are researching what they are supporting. In Turkey, femicide is a serious issue. In 2019 alone, more than 500 women were killed, just for being a woman. It is being reported that the number is much higher, but they have not been officially recorded. The actual number of women being MURDERED for being a woman may never be known. Turkish femicide is not just a problem for Turkey, it is a global problem. Throughout the world, women are persecuted for being a woman (believe it or not, misogyny is a serious problem here in America). If you are going to share your black and white pictures, please include the following link: https://en.morcati.org.tr Mor Çatı Kadın Sığınağı Vakfı is a women's shelter in Turkey that has spent the last 30 years saving women from femicide. The shelter was founded by feminists in hopes that it would help combat violence against women. Over 38,000 women have received support from the shelter. Please share this information with your black and white photos, and consider donating to this amazing cause! Amazing things happen when women support women.
